Review of The Celiac Kid (a new books by Stephanie Skolmoski, illustrations by Anneliese Bennion by Dharma Baker, Age 9
It looked like it was made by a kid. The pictures look amazing. It tells stuff that he likes even though he has Celiac. Gluten is wheat—it hides in a lot of stuff. Before he eats anything his parents or grandparents check the food label on the box or can. He can eat foods like veggies and fruits and a lot more. He also thinks Mexican food is sometimes good. He can also eat a lot of candies. The hardest thing to do without is bread. His parents take turns making bread for him each week with gluten free flour. So he can eat a lot of things, but there’s more.
His doctor’s name is Dr. Berry and he’s an expert Celiac doctor. His doctor tells him different things so he can be a super celiac kid. His parents listen so they can understand too. He goes to kindergarten and loves it, but when someone brings in a snack for their birthday he usually can’t eat anything because there might be some gluten in it. There are different kinds of things he can eat and drink. One thing to eat and drink is lemonade and watermelon. The holidays for him are a little bit of a problem.
You know it is not so bad to be a Celiac kid. There is no cure for Celiac disease but I’m glad I’ve learned to live with it. I’m just a smarter kid.
